PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning; the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to member of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for religious reality, which the children could remember.

A Partridge in a Pear Tree
The partridge in a pear tree is
Jesus the Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented
as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless
nestlings, recalling the expression of Christ's sadness over the fate of
Jerusalem:
Luke 13:34-35 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
